Mortimer West End v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 22 Apr 2007 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 70 runs
Match report
Thunderbirds - was the fifth Supermarionation children's series made by Gerry Anderson's AP Films.
In January 236 Pope Fabian was chosen pope in succession to Pope Anterus. Today April 2007 in the absence of Jason, Fabian was the chosen leader to look after the Argonauts. With fire in his belly and passion in his heart he went out with the children of Jason to enrich the members of Mortimer West End with the Phoenix ethos of fun, laughter and spirit.
Like the Thunderbirds we had our own International Rescue team. The Phoenix team & supporters was assembled from people of many different faiths (Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian) and cultural backgrounds (English, Indian, Pakistani, Parsi, Sri Lankan). Fabian gave the command and we all departed the White Hart HQ for our mission in South Reading.
In Thunderbird One sat Fabian, Yazdan & Zee
In Thunderbird Two sat Ali, Rahul, Farhan, Sanj & Vishal
In Thunderbird Three sat Indi & Shiv
In Thunderbird Four sat Bashar, Faisal, Hounir & Nad
In Thunderbird Five sat Amrit, Imran & Richard
Mortimer West End has a lovely ground and with the sun shining, it was the ideal way to start the season. Mortimer West End's captain on winning the toss elected to bat first and we had first go with the new cherry. On debut for Phoenix were Amrit and Imran.
Phoenix came out firing with some excellent line and length bowling from Ali and Amrit who were unlucky with the batsman playing & missing and some sharp chances being put down. Farhan came on first change and balled the ball of the season with this first ball - nothing more to add but the ball without bouncing sailed over the batsman & wicketkeeper for five wides. Farhan in the same over took Phoenix's first scalp as Imran took an impressive tumbling catch at deep square leg. Sanj & Fabian came on but it wasn’t to be a spinners day but they still made inroads with the highlight being Rahul's brilliant steeper of a catch at deep mid-on off Fabian's bowling. The bowler of the day was Nad who with his sublime left arm produced a battling display taking three wickets for twenty nine runs of his allotted eight overs.
Phoenix were energetic in the field and didn’t drop their heads throughout the day with sharp fielding to stop singles and running & diving to prevent boundaries with a special mention to Ali, Imran, Indi & Rahul who were vibrant & energetic. The Mortimer West End batsman got stuck in and battled away but never did really dominate the bowling even though they amassed two hundred and forty two off their allotted forty overs with forty five runs coming as extras.
At tea, Phoenix needed to bat well in order to make a game of it. Mortimer West End came in and immediately found their line & length. The Phoenix batsman never looked settled even though they found the boundaries with some excellent stroke play with Nad making a quick fire seventeen and Zee a steady fifteen. Phoenix kept losing wickets at crucial times and never sustained a partnership that would put pressure on Mortimer West End.
At twenty overs Phoenix were sixty for the loss of four wickets. Even though the game was all but lost, Phoenix had to show some fight and put some respectability back into the score line. The aim was to bat forty overs and make at least one hundred and seventy. Then in came Imran who hit two sixes and three fours for his twenty nine off eight balls and then Farhan who hit three sixes and four fours for his thirty nine. Ali & Sanj batted till the fortieth over and took the score to one hundred and seventy two when Ali was finally out for fourteen with Sanj unbeaten on fifteen.
The difference between winning and losing was the extras and in fact extras was the highest score of the day.
Well done to Mortimer West End on an excellent win and giving us a great day out. The game had a competitive edge but was played with great spirit resulting in some funny banter. As for Phoenix we just need to shake off the cob webs and oil our rusty bits.
