Match report
A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a historical novel by Charles Dickens. The plot centres on the years leading up to the French Revolution and culminates in the Jacobin Reign of Terror. It tells the story of two men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who look similar but are very different in personality. Darnay is a romantic French aristocrat, while Carton is a cynical English barrister. However, the two are in love with the same woman, Lucie Manette.
With their first victory recorded, Jason led the Argonauts voyage to Totteridge and a game against O.C.Traditionalists (OCT). The same fixture last season was a memorable one for two reasons - firstly due to the fact it took us nearly three hours to get there and secondly it was a belter of a game where everyone had fun & enjoyed a great day of cricket.
The Phoenix team packed the cars with their kit as well as maps, compasses, tents and extra food just in case we repeated the journey of last year but surprising to most it took only thirty five minutes to get there.
A warm day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, Jason elected to field first.
OCT's key player was O'Mara who plundered a excellent fifty that set up the foundations for a good score but after a wayward start Phoenix bowled well and finally bowled out OCT for one hundred and sixty four runs in the thirty eighth over. All the bowlers took wickets but a special mention to Vishal for his four (and being on a hat-trick) with excellent swing bowling and to Fabian for conceding only twenty six runs during a spell where the batsman could predict his variations.
Phoenix's challenge on the score got off to a bad start with Fabian getting out early. OCT bowled with great discipline and took the catches as they bowled Phoenix out for ninety five runs. Nad and Shiv continued their good form as Nad made a well made thirty one (which included four fours) and Shiv a splendid twenty nine (which included five fours) and both reached a personal milestone by passing one hundred runs for the season so far. Indi batted with grit for an unbeaten eighteen even though he got hit on the head with a a delivery that flew of a length and he required stitches to his ear. He is ok since the Carlsberg dampened the pain - it is assumed at this point that the hangover would have been more unbearable.
Phoenix had re-written Charles Dickens classic story with their own version. A Tale of Two Overs (2007)is a historical event acted out by the players of Phoenix and OCT. The plot centres on winning a cricket match in the years after the the Crane Revolution and culminates in the Jason's Reign of Power. It tells the story of two men, O'Mara and Fabian, who are off similar ability but are very different in personality. O'Mara the Confident Australian OCT all-rounder, while Fabian is the Charismatic Phoenix all-rounder. However, the two are in love with the same desire, Winning the game.
In the first over of the OCT innings, Phoenix missed an easy chance to get O'Mara dismissed and went on to punish Phoenix's mistake by scoring a fifty. The same incident then repeated itself in the first over of the Phoenix innings but OCT took their chance and Fabian was out first ball.
The difference between winning and losing this game was on taking the opportunity when luck reveals its head. OCT did and won whilst Phoenix didn't and lost. The novel's opening (It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. . .) and closing (It is a far, far better thing that I do. . .) are among the most famous lines in English literature.
Well done to OCT and in the past two years both teams have thoroughly enjoyed this fixture with new friendships being made - this is the best of times. As for Phoenix the Achilles heal of catching has caught up with us again - this is the worst of times.
Finally its better to have been part of a fun day regardless of results where everyone involved enjoyed the festivities - It is a far, far better thing that I do.
