Match report
Collective - A collective is a group of people who share or are motivated by at least one common issue or interest, or work together on a specific project(s) to achieve a common objective.
Borg - The Borg are a fictional race of cyborgs in the Star Trek universe. They are characterized by relentless pursuit of targets for assimilation, their collective consciousness that enables rapid adaptability to almost any defence, and the ability to continue functioning properly despite seemingly devastating blows.
In the absence of the Captain Jason and Vice captain Fabian, the responsibility of leading the Phoenix phenomenon lay in the hands of Sanjeev. A cloudy but warm day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, the newly appointed stand-in skipper had no hesitation in asking the opposition to bat first. On debut for Phoenix were Messieurs Ishan, Yarramshetty and Shah.
A two minute silence was conducted before the game commenced in honour of Ronnie (North Maidenhead's Ex-Captain) who died last week.
The North Maidenhead batsmen at the very beginning struggled to make runs as Farhan (Rowdy) and Faizan opened the attack for Phoenix with pace, control and movement. Many a time the batsman played and missed and when they did make contact the edges didn't carry to a fielder. The pressure was intense and they soon got their just rewards with a wicket each. Rowdy conceded only eighteen runs of his eight overs with Faizan conceding only twenty three. Sanj then came on to bowl and made an instant impact with some beautifully flighted deliveries which the batsman played all around and soon had three wickets to his name. After nineteen overs North Maidenhead were fifty six for five.
Nad came on to bowl and maintained the pressure with some great line and length bowling. Phoenix were in control at thirty overs but in the final ten overs basic mistakes were being made. Phoenix lost concentration and instead of trying to wrap up the game allowed the game to drift away. North Maidenhead finally closed at one hundred and eighty eight for seven off their allotted overs with fifty four runs being scored in their final six overs. Hussain was unbeaten on a well made but chancy sixty nine.
Phoenix haven't been scoring too heavily this season and needed to be strong and not allow their pride to be crushed with a poor batting display.
Tushar and Zahir opened the batting but soon were in trouble as Zahir departed in the opening over. Nad blazed in and out with Phoenix struggling at twenty six for two off seven overs. Tushar and Amrit assimilated into Borg defence in trying to stop a collapse. They battled hard scoring thirty five runs in the next twelve overs. Phoenix then lost three quick wickets of Amrit, Tushar and Rahul. At twenty four overs Phoenix were seventy seven for five.
Vasu and Faizan then assimilated into Borg attack as they battled brilliantly making forty five in the next nine overs. Phoenix then lost three quick wickets of Vasu, Richard and Rowdy. Phoenix needed sixty one runs in the final five overs to win. Mohammed then hit fifteen runs in six balls with two lusty blows for a six and a four. His luck ran out as he tried to continue his tempo. Sanj came in with forty runs needed for victory with just over three overs to spare.
Faizan kept a cool head and looked unfazed during the run chase. He started slowly assessing the situation and then at the right moment unleashed his bat and made in roads in this huge run chase. With some excellent running and sublime stroke play he made a brilliant fifty. He was finally out in the fortieth over and Phoenix commendable run chase was halted with nineteen runs still needed.
Well done to North Maiden for a great and intense game played in the right spirit and friendly atmosphere. To quote James (North Maidenhead's Captain) 'Ronnie would have been proud to witness such a game'.
So around of applause to all those that played and spectated to make the day a day to remember. Like the Borg, Phoenix showed their collective spirit and sense of fun. For those that play us we can only say 'resistance is futile' so assimilate with us and feel the love.
