Phoenix Cricket Club Won 88 runs
Match report
The Truman Show is a 1998 film directed by Peter Weir, written by Andrew Niccol, and starring Jim Carrey and Ed Harris. It is an exposition on freedom, free will and the human desire to experience these states even at the sacrifice of security.
Family Affair sung by SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE
The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, also known as "The Brotherhood" and Brotherhood of Mutants, is a Marvel Comics supervillain team devoted to mutant superiority over normal humans. They are among the chief adversaries of the X-Men. Amongst the several members of this band of brothers are:
Magneto aka Jason
Multiple Man aka Amrit
Sabretooth aka Fabian
Deadpool aka Imran
Toad aka Indi
Pyro aka Nad
Juggernaut aka Rahul
Avalanche aka Rowdy
Silver Samurai aka Sanjeev
Quill aka Tushar
Quicksilver aka Varun
Anole aka Vishal
The Black Pearl may have had Jack Sparrow leading his fellow pirates but today the Asian Diamond had Jason Saverimuttu leading the brotherhood as the long awaited return of the captain was over. Jason was once again at helm of the Argos and ready to set sail with the Argonauts.
The short voyage along the A30 took Phoenix to the sleepy village of Bagshot where a warm day and a good wicket welcomed both teams. Jason won the toss and the brotherhood broke out in cheer as he elected to bat first. Today this family affair was to be sung by Jason and The Family Phoenix as the Brother's Saverimuttu & Ghai were on show today as well as a father & son combination of Sanjeev and Vishal (who came on as sub for the injured Imran).
Magneto and Sabretooth opened the innings for Phoenix and soon were in trouble as Mageneto was out in the fourth over. Sabretooth went on the rampage with a quick fire twenty but disaster struck as he got himself out playing one too many shots and then Pyro returned to the pavilion without scoring a run. At this stage Phoenix were thirty one for three of eight overs. Juggernaut and Quicksilver steadied the innings but in the twelfth over Juggernaut succumbed after making a handy seventeen and Phoenix were struggling at fifty four for four.
Quicksilver looking solid after making a solid twenty then lost concentration as he lost his wicket and Phoenix were sinking slowly as they reached seventy two for five in the nineteenth over. Deadpool came out to bat and soon was back in the changing room as he twisted his knee and retired hurt.
Toad never got going and Phoenix were faced with an uphill struggle to put a good score as they were left hanging on the noose at eighty two for six in the twenty first over. A special mention to Indi for passing the one hundred runs for the season.
Multiple Man and Quill then weathered the storm as they played beautiful in defence and picking up the singles which were on offer with ease. With superb temperament they guided Phoenix to past one hundred and Multiple Man finally fell for a hard fought twelve Phoenix were on one hundred and sixteen for seven off thirty one overs.
Deadpool showed courage and conviction and came out to the middle to join Quill. He made a quick fire eighteen and at the fall of his wicket up stepped Avalanche. After thirty seven overs Phoenix were one hundred and thirty eight for eight.
Avalanche was out of the blocks from ball one and came down on the Bagshot bowling with aggression. Avalanche and Quill then upped the tempo and started to find the boundaries with some great batting as they managed to score a wapping thirty eight runs in the last three overs. Avalanche was unbeaten on twenty which was scored of just ten balls.
Last but not least the Phoenix innings was held together by Quill aka Tushar who was on the battlefield as early as the twenty first over with wickets falling in predictable periods. Tushar who has undoubtedly gone from strength to strength this season showed his maturity, guts and class as he held the innings together making an excellent unbeaten thirty eight (which includes five fours). He played a brilliant innings as he took Phoenix to a winning score of one hundred and seventy six of their allotted forty over.
After tea, Phoenix needed to bowl and field well if victory was to be theirs. Jason came out full of energy and confidence knowing he could defend the score.
Quill and Avalanche opened the bowling with pace and control and Quill made the early breakthrough with a slower ball that had the opener out with an plumb LBW shout.
What came next was the Pyro show as Nad bowled with freedom, took wickets at free will and had the human desire to experience being the leading wicket taker. He bowled beautifully and brilliantly as his left arm spin bamboozled the Bagshot batsman as he tore away the batsman defence with consummate ease. The highlight being hime taking three wickets in four balls in one over. His seven over spell cost him a measly eleven runs for a magnificent six wickets. A special mention to Nad for passing the thirty wickets tally for the season thus far and for producing Phoenix's best ever bowling figures and first six wicket hall.
The Phoenix fielding was top notch with Quicksilver showing everyone how it was done (even eclipsing his brother Juggernaut) as he electric in the field. Above all not one catch was dropped unlike last week at Kempton with Quill, Multiple Man and Quicksilver taking catches with ease - a special mention to Amrit for his quick alertness as took a low chance that was fumbled by Avalanche and Pyro.
Toad was once again terrific behind the stumps taking the ball cleanly and diving around on wayward deliveries as he conceded no byes. Toad has taken to the wicket keeping role with ease and his improvement can only be to the betterment of the side.
Also a thank you for Anole aka Vishal who came on and fielded from backward square leg to short fine leg for the injured Deadpool. He done a grand job as he prevented any extra runs being taken with his strong throwing arm. A special mention to Vishal who this season won the Under Eleven's Best Batsman Award for Ashford Cricket Club.
Silver Samurai and Multiple Man mopped up the rest of the three wickets and Phoenix secured a eight eight run victory.
The difference in winning and losing this season has been the absence of Jason as captain but he must be proud and warmed at seeing that in his absence the growth of his men's commitment, contribution and above all cricketing betterment.
Well done to Bagshot for a great game and for being great hosts. As for Phoenix. To quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy quotes (American 35th US President (1961-63), 1917-1963), 'I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battles or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit'.
Finally from the Atharva Veda 'Society can not progress unless each citizen make his contribution and performs his duties'. Today was such a day as everyone played a role in this victory.
