After a week long voyage of travelling far & wide across this great landscape of ours in quest of victories, Phoenix's formidable army at last came home to rest. This was the first game for Phoenix after their now infamous tour of Torquay. The Phoenix cricketers were looking forward to an outing closer to home, to display their talents in the fine art of blade wielding & leather jettisoning, otherwise known as cricket. Rewards of wine & good cheer were awaiting a triumphant result but as always the lions were hungry in raucous anticipation of a defeated team. With the players returning with wounds, hangovers and joyous memories, the question was were they ready for their next encounter with Godalming.

A warm day welcomed both teams and after winning the toss, the stand-in captain Sanj invited the opposition to bat first on a very damp wicket. Making their debuts for Phoenix were Richard Parker, Karthik, Senthil & Ganguly.

Tushar and Senthil opened the attack. Tushar, who is slowly but surely gaining confidence in his bowling continued his development and quickly, made the breakthrough as Sanj took an excellent one handed catch in the gully and then fortune was on his side as the batsman played on. Senthil bowled with good pace and was unlucky as two sharp edges were not taken.

After eleven overs Godalming had only twenty three runs on the board with the loss of two wickets. Sanj came on and dried up the runs at his end with some deft and guile spin bowling conceding only twenty one runs off his ten overs.

In order to make a game of if Sanj then elected to bowl his triad of swing Kashif, Ganguly and Richard. After a nervy start they soon found the perfect line & length and wickets started to fall in regular intervals. Between them they took four wickets for forty three runs off twelve overs. The fielding was on top form as everyone supported the bowling especially Karthik and Rahul who were brilliant in the field as they stopped everything that was hit at them.

A mention to Indi for his excellant work behind the stumps as he only gave away a single bye, took a catch and enforced a ran out in only his second stint at keeping.

At tea, Godalming posted one hundred eleven of their allotted thirty five overs. Phoenix just needed to bat sensibly if they wanted to win the game.

A non-nonsense cricketer with a penchant for brutality Fabian continued his sumptuous form and with Nad, who plays with a natural elegance, began to make inroads In the run chase. They scored a brilliant ninety one run opening partnership in thirteen overs when Fabian lost his wicket after scoring his fourth fifty off the season which included five fours and three sixes. Fabian has now scored one century and three half centuries in his last five innings - the blip was a forty not out in the second of those five innings.

Nad continued to play with ease and like the old fox that he is, he made the wiliest thirty one runs to take Phoenix level with Godalming. Phoenix then gave the skipper a scare as they lost 3 quick wickets but Tushar took Phoenix past the winning line with a lovely cover drive for four.

Well done Godalming for a great game and for being once again great hosts. The Phoenix Juggernaut continues on as they go from town to town 'Transforming as Cricketers in disguise' entertaining everyone with their cricketing skills and standup comic routines. Jason 'Optimus Prime' Saverimuttu would have been proud of his autobots.

A special mention to Skipper Sanj who broke his 100% losing record with his first win as captain. On that note 'A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success'. So Sanj would like to thank all the members for their continued support.

Finally Phoenix Cricket Club can be summed by following quote by Tom Robbins (an American author), 'To achieve the impossible, it is precisely the unthinkable that must be thought.'
