Cornwood v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Fri 20 Jul 2007 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 29 runs
Match report
Sobek was an ancient Egyptian god of crocodiles, the people of Egypt worshiping him to gain his protection and strength, or reviling him and killing the crocodiles of the area because of the evil that they could do.
So on to the second game of the tour. A lovely hot day welcomed Phoenix to a ground of par excellence with Jason taking charge of the team after his 'Reading & the BMW' escapades with Sanj & Tush. Cornwood had a few players short and Phoenix volunteered Yazdan and Amrit to play for the opposition - a gesture kindly accepted & appreciated by the opposition. With Cornwood having players short Jason offered them to bat first.
The pressure of playing against Phoenix got hold of Amrit as he hurt his back in the warm out and in fact couldn't come out for Cornwood after all. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Cornwood came out to bat and after a purposeful start began to express themselves. The Phoenix bowlers bowled well keeping the run rate at a manageable level but then their Pakistani A international player Mohammad Salman took control. He made a brilliant century to take Cornwood to two hundred and fifteen with eight wickets down off their allotted overs. Nad and Sanj once again bowled brilliantly in tandem against some quality opposition as they conceded only sixty runs off their sixteen overs. Amongst the others Tush ended with two wickets and Rahul with three. A quick mention for Shiv who took his first wicket for Phoenix as he bowled out the last over of the Cornwood innings.
At tea Phoenix needed to bat well and keep the scoreboard ticking over if they were to win the game.
Phoenix came out and started off slowly and then never recovered. Like a crocodile Jason waited patiently for his chance and as soon as a opportunity for a run rose, he pounced on the chance and snared his prey.
He played a masterful innings as he brought back the glory years with the 'Saverimuttu Drive' coming out on show as he made his first fifty of the season. With precision placement, running and driving Jason made an excellent sixty which included eight fours and a six.
The crocodile's power to snatch and destroy it's prey was thought to be symbolic of the might of the pharaoh - the strength and energy of the reptile was a manifestation of the pharaoh's own power. In terms of Phoenix, the pharaoh being the Phoenix Skipper himself and Sobek would have been proud of this rejuvenation.
But alas the run chased was doomed at the loss of Jason's wicket and even though another five players reach double figures no one could push the scoring to meet the high run rate required to win.
A special mention to Yazdan who, playing for the opposition, took the wicket of Jim. A moment we all will never forget.
Well done to Cornwood for an excellent game, great banter and being fabulous hosts. As for Phoenix, urgency and playing the right shot at the right time was the difference between winning and losing.
