Holbeton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sat 21 Jul 2007 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 9 runs
Match report
Thievery Corporation - a Washington, D.C.-based production and DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton and their supporting artists. Their music can be characterized as downtempo electronica with influences of dub, acid jazz, Indian classical and Brazilian styles (such as bossa nova) fused together with a lounge aesthetic.
So on to the penultimate game of the tour. A picturesque ground located in the Flete Estate engulfed by tress, bushes and sheep welcomed Phoenix. Once again the opposition were short of players and Sanj, who was standing in as skipper for the injured Fabian, volunteered Zee to play for them. On winning the toss, the opposition captain opted to bat first.
Tush and Anup opened the bowling and soon had the perfect line and length with the Holberton batsman finding it hard to find boundaries. The pressure continued to build with some great fielding and excellent bowling. After thirty overs Holberton reached one hundred runs with only five overs to go.
Then out of the blue the song 'The Time We Lost Our Way' by Thievery Corporation echoed in our ears as Phoenix lost control of the match. In the final five overs Holberton scored fifty two runs as Zee and Cook went on a rampage. After tea Phoenix needed to bat sensibly in order to win the game.
Phoenix came out to bat with a renewed purpose looked untroubled and solid. Fabian and Shiv amassed one hundred runs for the opening partnership with ten overs to go as they played with ease and confidence. Fabian once again played a brilliantly with power and placement as he reached another fifty and Shiv 'steady as a rock' made an excellent hard fought forty six which included two fours. A special mention to Shiv who passed two hundred runs for the season and Fabian who passed three hundred runs.
Inexplicably Fabian was given out when he was on sixty one which included five fours and three sixes but victory was in Phoenix own grasp as they needed fifty two runs to win with ten overs to go.
Then once again out of the blue the song 'The Time We Lost Our Way' by Thievery Corporation echoed in our ears as Phoenix lost control of the match again. Phoenix kept losing wickets in the run chase which increased the run rate and when the final ball was bowled Phoenix were robbed of a win by nine runs.
Well done to Holberton for a splendid game and being extra-ordinary hosts with home made cakes and a curry dinner at the local pub after the game. As for Phoenix, once again urgency and playing the right shot at the right time was the difference between winning and losing.
