Turnham Green v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 22 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 9 wickets

Match report In the third year of the reign of Ammenemes III, three women and two men of a nomadic desert tribe whom the ancient Egyptians called Medjay Elephantine, stated simply, "The desert is dying of hunger." In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but everyone knows that Jason's Argonauts will never go hungry with teas being not too far away. Question is how much can they eat.

With the Saverimuttu Bother's away on 'call of duty' directives Sanj took charge of the Red Caps once again. A warm but windy day welcomed both teams and after having an inspection of the pitch, Sanj was surprised to be asked to bowl first on losing the toss.

On May 9th 2008, it was reported to the Highway Authority the following hazard (Highway Authority Reference 35842 & 35846 and Location TQ 20491 78355): Unevenness due to rut or gully - Road surface that has been infilled by roadworks is very rutted with a large pothole in the carriageway. This is a dangerous roadsurface on a busy junction.

Shaunak and Anup opened up the bowling and in the first overs had the Turnham Green batsman all at sea with the pitch conditions. It seems that another hazard report should be sent to the Highway Authority as the pitch was playing up with uneven bounce with deliveries keeping low half track and deliveries shooting up on a length.

Shaunak and Anup bowled imperiously has they only conceded eighteen runs of their combined ten over spell. Turnham Green continued to struggle to make runs as they lost wickets in regular intervals. The quick's had the batsman unsure of the footwork whilst the spinners confused them with turn & bounce. The groundwork was good as the fielders were alert on the singles and the catches being held - a special mention to Shiv who took an outstanding catch as he ran from deep mid off boundary and caught the ball in the deep extra cover region.

At tea, Phoenix needed one hundred and fifteen runs to win which could be a concern due to the pitch condition as well as the ability to self destruct and collapse.

Tushar and Shiv opened the batting and looked solid from ball one. Tushar found his rhythm and uncharacteristically was hitting the balls all over the park. Shiv never found his touch and was out in the fifth over but the score was on twenty four. In strode Rahul who as yet hasn’t promised his potential this season thus far.

Both Tushar and Rahul played with good technique and above all concentration as they began to make inroads to the winning target. Tushar natural game is defensive whilst Rahul's is offensive and this is what they resorted to as they defended the good balls, punished the bad deliveries and in-between ran well looking for quick singles. The perfect combination to have in a run chase akin to the chase made by Nad and Imran versus North Maidenhead.

They never looked in trouble and produced a match winning ninety one run partnership in twenty two overs to see Phoenix to victory with comparative ease with both overs and wickets to spare. Tushar played with maturity as he assessed the situation quickly and adapted his game to suit making an extremely good thirty seven (which included two fours) and Rahul played with his normal razzmatazz scoring an excellent forty seven (which included five fours and a six).

In the world of international football, Spain have faced penalty shoot-outs to decide quarter-finals on June 22 on three occasions. Three times, they have lost with defeat to Belgium at the 1986 World Cup, to England at Euro 96 and finally to South Korea in the 2002 World Cup. June 22nd 2008 was a different story when they beat Italy on penalties to progress to the semi-finals of Euro 2008.

If the above was a momentous occasion then a feat to rival the above was also achieved on June 22nd where Sanj won his first game of the season as captain.

Rahul batted with consummate ease as he took Phoenix to victory on a pitch that was conducive for bowling and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.

Well done to Turnham Green for a great day out and excellent teas.

As for Phoenix, earlier this year it was shared that we need to embed a teamwork ethos in our team where regardless of ability every members is positively contributing to the club. To quote William Pollard (American businessman CEO) “It is the responsibility of leadership to provide opportunity, and the responsibility of individuals to contribute.”

There is an opportunity to instil a "care mindset" across our people by shining a spotlight on excellent performance and exemplary attitude. During these times we want to encourage team members to demonstrate responsibility and good behaviours. This will allow members to spread excellence and model an approach that will lead to positive growth throughout our club. To quote Anthony Robbins (American advisor to leaders) “It is not what we get. But who we become, what we contribute... that gives meaning to our lives.”

Today was a performance that is expected where everyone contributes regardless of the result.
