Claygate v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Thu 14 Aug 2008 at 5.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 40 runs

Match report Egypt's short-lived unity with Syria consolidated the dream of Arab but, three years after, the union fell apart. Just as the union with Syria crumbled, dealing a crushing blow to dreams of Arab unity, the revolution broke out in Yemen. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts remain united and stop any internal revolution leading to a coup d’état.

In the absence of the Jason and with Fabian still not recovered from his trip to India, Sanj led the Phoenix Red Caps to the small village of Claygate in the Esher borders for a twenty twenty jaunt. The sun was out but for how long was the question and with rain & bad light due the opposition captain had no hesitation to bat first on winning the toss.

The Claygate openers came out with a purpose and hit the very first ball of the innings to the boundary, signs looked ominous and Phoenix needed to bowl well if they wanted to restrict Claygate to a score below one hundred and thirty or so.

Farhan made the early breakthroughs with two wickets and Ali kept the pressure on with some tight bowling as Phoenix restricted Claygate to just over five runs per over in the first eight overs of the game. Sanj then added more pressure as he took a wicket of his second ball and the game was tightly balanced.

Phoenix were full of energy in the field and with a few new faces made it a fun atmosphere to enjoy their cricket in and same for the opposition. Funny jokes and good humoured banter echoed across the ground as all and sundry enjoyed the game but there was a game to be played and of course to be won. The difference in winning would be the team that could up their game and deal with the pressure.

The Claygate batsman swashed, swished and missed as they tried to up the scoring and especially against Fabian's bowling. Fabian slowed downed his pace allowing the ball to turn and above all he found the perfect length. The opposition batsman rode their luck as edges went just past Indi whose leaping can be herald from the Adumu Dance of the Maasai People (an indigenous African ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania).

Then two sets off four bad overs cost Phoenix the game. The first as Phoenix conceded fifty one runs in four overs then elevated Claygate's score to one hundred and fifty three off their allotted twenty overs with their skipper Joe making an excellent fifty.

Phoenix came out to bat knowing that the ball needed to be hit to all parts of the ground quickly as the sun was setting in the early evening sky. Phoenix got of to a bad start losing Zahir in just the second over but Fabian and Tahir soon got Phoenix to were they wanted to be as they hit twenty two runs of the next two overs. Tahir's first two scoring shots were sixes but another set back befell Phoenix as Fabian was out trying to hoist another ball out of the park.

Tahir and Imran then settled the nerves and went about their business and that being to score runs. They made an excellent fifty three run partnership of just seven overs with Tahir smashing an excellent forty seven (which included two sixes and four fours) and Imran scampering to a quick fire nineteen (which included three fours).

Then the second set of the 'bad four overs' came to play as Phoenix then lost five wickets for seven runs in just four overs. With the light fading fast and seeing the ball difficult then game was all but over. Sanj hit the last ball for a single and the game was over with Claygate winning by forty runs.

Cyrus's attitude & behaviour was exceptional as he cheered, applauded & offered words of encouragement to everyone as they batted, bowled & fielded. This is why he is known as Uncle Brother and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.

Well done to Claygate for a fun game and rushing through their overs so to avoid the fading light. As for Phoenix, once again they were united in defeat and above all came of the pitch smiling and laughing. This is what cricket should be all about.

Individual commitment to a group effort is what makes a team work. To quote W. H. Auden (English born American Poet, Dramatist and Editor who achieved early fame in the 1930s as a hero of the left during the Great Depression. 1907-1973) “We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don't know”.
