Magdalen v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 21 Jun 2015 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 26 runs
Match report
Lost to Magdalen by 26 runs. Our very own Wendel (Skipper of Magdalen) had no hesistancy in declaring to bat first on winning the toss as the sun was out, the pitch was flat and the outfield looked fast. We got to a great start as Ahmad took a wicket with his very first ball for Phoenix but that was as good as it got. We didnt bowl with discipline as we lost our lines & lengths too easily which meant we didnt bowl to our field placements thus leaving too many gaps. In the mayhem Sethi took a stunning catch in the gully region and Vishal nearly pulled off a screamer as he couldnt hold on as he dived full stretch to his right at point. Sanj dropped Alex who went onto make a century and Magdalen to a score of 237.
Without Kully, Vishal opened the innings with Prince. It was a tough challenge to score the runs but the chase got even harder when we lost both Prince & Sethi very early on. After a nervous start, Vishal & Haseeb eased themselves into the game with a few cracking shots to get their confidence going. Haseeb followed up his half century from last week with another fifty as he smashed 69 off 53 balls which included 7 fours & 2 sixes. Vishal finally unleashed the talent he has been showing in glimpses with his maiden fifty as he fired 67 from 66 balls which included 6 fours & 3 sixes. They put on 100 runs for the 3rd wicket and gave us hope for a win. A drinks we needed 131 to win off 20 overs but soon after we lost Haseeb and with 50 runs to win we lost Vishal.
We had 10 overs remaining Rowdy, who is genuine all-rounder hit 44 off 36 balls which included 6 fours & 1 six, ran out of partners and we were all out for 220. Magdalen's left arm opener Hook took the wickets at the crucial moments and ended up with 5 to his name.
Defeat today was due to inexperience from our young guns who simply played the wrong shot at the wrong time to get themselves out. You can only learn from the middle and with time they will take the extra step to see us to victory. A excellant display and attitude from both Vishal & Haseeb. The team was at their jovial best and everyone hugged, applauded & laughed as we came off the pitch. We were more happy in defeat today than in victory last week.
Special mention to Vishal for the contention for shot of the season as he whipped Wendel's legspin over the midwicket boundry for a monstrous six. Also a special mention to Meher who fielded with full dedication and committment. Finally a mention to Wendel, who is a Phoenix by heart, for taking the 'banter' well and making a game of it.
