Ham & Petersham v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 23 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 11 runs
Match report
Beat Ham & Petersham by 11 runs. A rain affected game of 30 overs that ebbed and flow from defeat to victory to defeat and back to victory. Heavy clouds and rain welcomed both teams and when the heavens burst everyone was more than willing to shake hands and go to the pub to watch the football. Alas the skippers showed some sense and patience to wait a bit longer when the sun & blue skies appeared. So onto the match and on winning the toss the Ham & Petersham skipper opted to bowl first to make use of a green wicket, overcast conditions and a wet outfield and his decision seemed justified as soon after start of play Phoenix were struggling at 27 for 5.
Sethi who opened up the innings was running out of partners and a low score was beckoning. Sakhil showed some resistance upping the tempo with a quick fire 20 off 15 balls (which included 3 fours and a six) and Aman helped us get past hundred with an important 29 off 32 balls (which included a four and 2 sixes) but alas when they looked set they got out putting us back in our precarious position. Sanj came out at 118 for 9 and was Dravid like solid as the final wicket scored 25 runs on what was a match winning contribution. At tea, Phoenix had made 143 but were rueing themselves as we were all out with 26 balls still left in the innings. To note we had more ducks (that being 5) then the chinese restaurant across the road.
Sethi had grafted hard & curbed his natural flair to hold the innings togther for without him we would been all out for less that fifty. He defended when he needed to defend but attacked on any slight oppurtunity given to him as he magnificnetly made 71 off 69 balls (which included 9 fours and 3 sixes).
Ham & Petersham came out to bat knowing that the target was gettable as the conditions now favoured the batting side. Phoenix made a quick breakthrough but then Ham & Petersham went about their business with ease as they played some top shots and punished some bad bowling. After 10 overs, they were on 55 for 1 and looked set for victory. Mannu & Jay kept the pressure on with some disciplined bowling as the run rate quickly dropped and add to this mix Sanj's ability to take wickets under pressure put Phoenix on the front foot. Jay took two important catches of Ham & Petersham's best batsman off Sanj's bowling to swing the pendulum in favour of Phoenix.
With wickets tumbling and the run rate ever increasing, Rowdy & Sakhil just needed to bowl in the right areas in the death overs. 28 were needed in the last 4 overs but we held our nerve to an unexpected victory that seems distant when we were struggling at 27 for 5 earlier in the day.
WIth so many ducks in the game for both sides, 8 in total, it is fitting to finish with a Chinese Proverbs "He who is sure of his victory will not start a war".
Statistically the leading players this season are as follow:
Kully - 551 runs
Sethi - 549 runs
Sanj - 41 wickets
Mannu - 30 wickets
