Match report
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts battle a mighty Kempton side to defeat?
So with the first two games of the season washed away, Phoenix travelled the short distance to Kempton for their first outing of the season. Phoenix in their new kits were led by Sanj in the absence of both the Saverimuttu brothers. Could the red caps do themselves proud? Adil and Daya were making their debuts.
With a weakened batting line up, Sanj offered Kempton to bat first in hopes of making a good day of cricket for all involved.
Ali and Farhan opened the bowling and soon were in their rhythm with good pace and great line & lengths. They both kept the bowling tight with the batsman playing & missing as well as some sharp ground fielding by the close in fielders.
Ali made the first breakthrough in his third over with Rahul taking a comfortable catch. Amrit came on and again found the consistency he was looking for and bowled a beauty of an inswinging delivery in his second over.
At this point Phoenix were on top but everyone knew that could soon change. Nad & Sanj came on to bowl and they tightened the screw with more tight bowling. The Kempton batsman found it hard to score on a damp wicket with a lush grassy outfield. Sanj made the breakthrough with the wicket of the captain and the red caps were giving Kempton a real scare.
After 40 overs Kempton were 97 for three. Then inexperience took hold and the tight fielding began to slip with resulted in missed stumpings, dropped catches, over throws with no backing up and allowing singles when there never should have been a run. The Kempton batsmen rode their luck and went after the bowling. Nad and Sanj were punished in which they conceded fifty nine runs in the final five overs. At tea, Phoenix restricted Kempton to just one hundred and fifty six off forty five overs. Phoenix if they batted well could draw the game or even win.
Phoenix came out to bat with a purpose but the strength of the Kempton's bowling could easily be seen. Phoenix's challenge was all over by the sixteenth over as they slumped to thirty for six. Only reputation was left to play for and Nad stopped the rot with some aggressive batting but was eventually out for a fine thirty two (which included four fours).
With Ali and Sanj left for the final wicket a draw could have been possible but Kempton bought back their opening quick and it was all over in the thirty fifth over as Phoenix were bowled out for eighty six. Mason finished with eleven overs four wickets for fifteen runs.
Nad bowled exceptionally well for a long spell that restricted Kempton and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.
Thanks to Kempton for a great game and being great hosts. This Phoenix side pushed & scared Kempton to the very end which showed great spirit & unity amongst the lads which helped them maintain their respect.
In union there is strength and to quote Mahatma Gandhi "Unity to be real must stand the severest strain without breaking".
