Match report
The book 'Havoc, In Its Third Year' by Ronan Bennett is an evocative, sombre account of a man facing a crisis of spirit and conscience in early 17th-century England, when "men of property were gripped by fears" and decried the poor, the immigrant and the unemployed as spreaders of crime and sin. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts provide evocative and maybe erotic displays of manhood for the female spectators to witness.
The Battle of Hastings is one of the few truly decisive battles in history. On a single day Duke William of Normandy conquered King Harold and at the same time a kingdom that had resisted Viking invasions for years on end, ending a line of Anglo-Saxon kings that claim decent from Alfred the Great. This conquest altered the whole outlook of England, taking a nation that had looked towards Scandinavia, especially under three Danish kings, and locking her into a partnership and a struggle with France that was to last for centuries.
Swein was King of Denmark whose son was called Cnut. When Cnut died his choice for king was Harthacnut, son of Emma of Normandy. The three kings had a profound impact on the Battle of Hastings even though they died well before 1066.
Lets not get distracted by these Sweins and Cnuts since there are no place for them in the Phoenix and lets talk cricket.
Jason led the Red Caps on a cloudy day to the majestic Sussex county ground of Hastings. An excellent venue with a batting track for everyone to make runs on. On losing the toss, Phoenix were asked to bowl first.
Like the ground, the Hastings batsman were a talented bunch were four of the top five batsman made scores past fifty but a special mention to Adam who showed pure class and Chris who made batting look easy as he hit sixty four off just twenty deliveries. All the bowlers did well but the pick of the bunch was Sanj who troubled all the batsman and had Chris dropped off his very first ball he faced. Yazdan took two fine catches and Jason had a spark of brilliance as he made a stumping. The first wigging went to Zee and the last to Rowdy.
A tea, Phoenix had a mammoth two hundred and eighty eight to chase down. It was time to enjoy the ground and do the best we could against a formidable side.
The worst and funniest possible start occurred as Jason was run out without facing a ball. He walked off to cheers as he was the first to wear the duck hat. The Phoenix batsman got stuck in but the run rate was too high to maintain and in the pursuit of runs they perished but credit due since they gave all they got. Fabian smashed seven fours in his thirty nine, Tushar hit six fours in his twenty nine, Zahir hit four fours in his twenty six and finally Indi hit nine fours in his forty one. The biggest cheer came as Yazdan was out first ball and the duck hat was his until the next match. Phoenix were finally bowled out for one hundred ninety seven.
Indi batted with pure determination and help Phoenix get to a respectable score and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Rahul, Tushar and Zahir for passing one hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to Hastings for a fun game and giving us the opportunity to play in a spectacular venue. As for Phoenix, carry on with this determination for this will only improve each of us individually as well as us as a collective.
To quote Winston Churchill (British Prime Minister during World War II. 1874-1965) “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
