Battle v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 20 Jul 2008 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 125 runs
Match report
The third anniversary of King Norodom Sihamoni’s of Cambodia coronation was celebrated at the royal palace in Phnom Penh where the religious and traditional ceremony was organised in the presence of Princess Norodom Bopha Devi and members of the royal family. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts celebrate a victory on their last game of Tour.
This day (July 20th) is infamous in history for battles & plots. On this day in 19i6, The Battle of Fromelles took place. This was the first battle outing on the Western Front of the Australian Imperial Force and was planned to distract German forces away from the Somme. Also the July 20 plot of 1944 was a failed attempt to assassinate German dictator Adolf Hitler and to take power by means of a plan called Operation Walküre, which was supposed to subdue possible unrest.
Sanj led the Red Caps on a sunny day to the lovely and quaint ground of Battle. A sporting gesture by the opposition skipper who invited Phoenix to bat first.
With Fabian at the top of the order, Sanj gave the opportunity to for all those that normally bat lower down the order to move up and stake a claim to the their batting prowess. What happened next is the story of Fabian.
Fabian: The Story of a Moralist is Kastner's 1931 novel which concerns Berlin copywriter Jacob Fabian, whose world collapses around him in this personalised portrait of the fall of the Weimar Republic. In the current world today we have our own story. Fabian: The Story of a Cricketer is Phoenix's 2008 event which concerns Cranford batsman Fabian Saverimuttu, who collapses bowling attacks around him in this personalised portrait of the fall of the cricket club of Battle.
Fabian after a slow start he hit the turbo charge and thundered his way to his second century of the season. Like Thor, carnage and mayhem follow his destructive path as he hit twenty two fours in an unbeaten one hundred and eight runs. Many Phoenix records were broken in that innings as one he scored the highest individual score, hit the most fours in an innings and finally helped Phoenix achieve their highest team total. The duck hat went to Rahul who was out on the very last ball of the innings.
At tea, Phoenix had scored two hundred and sixty six off their allotted forty overs. Phoenix came out to the field in a buoyant and jubilant manner. It could be because of the winning score that was posted or, more likely, due to the excellent teas that were served.
The game was all over in the first sixteen overs as Rahul played author in the mode of Enid Bylton. Enid Bylton wrote the first of the Famous Five novels called Five On A Treasure Island but Rahul had his own famous five. He took five wickets and etched is name as only the third bowler on the Hall of Fame. The wigging rights went to Anup who misfielded whilst having the wig on.
Rahul had the Battle batsman in a spin and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian for passing six hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to Battle for making a game of it and allowing for a fun day out to all. As for Phoenix, just don’t loose the discipline and this could be the best season we have had in terms of achievement.
Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability. To quote Harry S Truman (American 33rd President of the United States, 1884-1972) “If I want to be great I have to win the victory over myself... self-discipline.”
