Thames Ditton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 26 Jun 2016 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 37 runs
Match report
Beat Thames Ditton by 37 runs. An overcast day & a well worn wicket welcomed both teams and on winning the toss Sanjeev had no hesitation to bat first. A curious decision at first but the skipper had the batting line up and scores on the board no doubly puts pressure on the opposition. What happened next was a bit of a surprise, was it due to the pitch, bad shot selection, circumspect batting or no patience that cost us wickets as we slumped to 37 for 4 in just 12 overs. Then the unthinkable happened when Jeeta who was looking comfortable on 35 runs off 34 balls, which included 4 fours & a six, gifted his wicket away and we looked in deep trouble at 83 for 6 with 19.3 overs gone.
In came Baljit Suman who seemed under no pressure who after playing out a few dot balls got his confidence going with four, six and a four in consecutive balls. At 136 for 9, Phoenix were struggling and new a score post 160 was key. Babbu & Sanj held on and put on a crucial 29 run partnership off 9 overs to take the team to 165 at tea. Babbu ended with an invaluable 45 runs off 47 balls which included 3 fours and a six.
We got off to a fantastic start with Hitesh Pabari taking his first wicket for the club in the very first over. A lovely bit of inswing bowling. TDCC then got on top and were 66 for 1 in 12 overs and seemed to be coasting. Then Mannu Singh & Jay Dhillon put on the brakes as tight bowling put the pressure on the run rate which caused a flurry of lost wickets. Mannu's 8 overs went for just 12 runs & 2 wickets whilst Jay's 8 overs going for 26 runs & 4 wickets. Finally TDCC were out for 128. The game was nervously close and the captain's two key decisions helped in the win. Firstly batting sensibly with Babbu for those extra 29 runs and secondly taking himself off after just bowling the one over.
A great team effort where everyone contributed to the win. After which we celebrated with 5 Jugs of Beer with our host buying us two of those and eating out at an Indian restaurant - a good day all round with Cricket, Beer, Food & Laughter for all to enjoy.
Statistically the leading players at the end of season are as follow:
Jay - 383 runs
Prince - 274 runs
Sanj - 23 wickets
Mannu - 21 wickets
