Prestcold v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 07 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 1 run
Match report
Beat Prestcold by 1 run. Sethi Singh won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on this hot day. History dictates that on a batting track with a smallish boundary on one side a low scoring game is played out. Harman Johal & Jay Dhillon gave us the perfect start as they hit 70 off the first 10 overs which included between them 11 fours & a
six. We then went from 70 for no loss to 81 for 4 in 6 overs. Harman was on 33 when Jay lost his wicket, he was on 34 when Sethi got out, he was on 35 when Prince Kairon came to his end and finally Harman was on 36 when he fell.
Baljit Suman kept us going as he tried to get us to a good score but he finally succumbed on brilliantly played 41 which included 9 fours. Once again a second mini collapse dented our hopes of a big score as we lost 3 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs. Some lusty blows at the end by Farhan Nabeel got us to 172 but we were all out with 9 overs still in
the bank unused.
After tea, Prestcold got off to a flying start but even though they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, they managed to make the partnerships count. Fast forward to 30 overs with Prestcold in the driving seat who needed 43 to win in 10 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Their two batsmen looking comfortable on 69 & 29 not out. We were staring
defeat in the face.
Then the game changed. Ben bowled a tight spell conceding only 12 runs in 5 overs and with the pressure building Mannu Singh & Harman took advantage with 3 quick wickets. Vicky had to bowl the 37 & 39 overs which meant who would bowl the final over as Farhan, Mannu & Harman had completed their spells.
Vikas Haripuriya bowled his final 2 overs magnificently well and with with great discipline as he took a vital 2 wickets conceding only 6 runs.
So onto the final over. Sethi took responsibility but the field placing looked all wrong. Sanjeev Kumar was screaming from the sidelines to bring up fine leg to short 45 for the paddle sweep. Remember Sanj has played against this team for over 15 years now.
Prestcold need 3 to win.
Riley (not a batsman) on strike, Debois (normally the opening batsman) on the non-strikers end.
Phoenix needed the 1 wicket.
Ball 39.1, Sethi bowls full outside off stump, play & miss by Riley.
Ball 39.2, Sethi bowls short on the leg stump, top edge that drops at 45, easy single as fine leg runs in & fields.
Ball 39.3, Debois on strike, fine leg is changed to short 45, Sethi bowls short on middle stump, Debois scoops & his caught by Daniel Bearfoot-Fallon at Short 45.
Phoenix win. What a fantastic game of cricket.
Statistically the leading players at the end of season are as follow:
Jay - 668 runs
Prince - 370 runs
Mannu - 33 wickets
Sanj - 23 wickets
