Stanmore v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 07 May 2017 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 35 runs

Match report Won by 35 runs. An brilliant & exciting win for the Phoenix boys today but the game was was much closer & more tense filled than the final results shows. Sanjeev Kumar won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on this warm & sunny day. The wicket was a belter for batting and the batsmen would get full value for their shots as the ball would come on nicely and on top of that the outfield was electric fast.

We got off to a flying start as Rocky Sharma & Baljit Singh hit the ball to all parts and scoring at 8 runs per over. They put on 106 for the first wicket of just 13.2 overs. We finally posted 282 of our allotted 40 overs with contributions from all the batsmen with Rocky making 34 of 37 balls (4 fours), Rajinder Chouhan 38 off 27 balls (7 fours), Harman Johal 21 off 19 balls (1 four & 1 six), Baljit Suman 23 off 27 balls (3 fours), BaBa Bunty Tejvir 22 off 32 balls (1 four) and Vikas Haripuriya 18 off 16 balls (3 fours).

The whole inning was based on a brilliant century by Baljit Singh who scored 101 off just 70 balls which included 12 fours & 1 six. At one stage at 171 for 1 we thought we would post a score in the three hundreds. In fact the lower order put on 67 runs to help us post a good total after we lost 5 wickets in 8 overs just after 20 over drinks.

At tea, with the samosas, spring rolls & pakoras filling our bellies we felt at ease. Many of us were thinking of the beers after the game but Stanmore had other ideas. Stanmore made a superb run chase as they took the game right to the end. They made an even better start than us and within the third over Phoenix had boundary riders to prevent the heavy scoring.

Sanjeev stayed calm & soon enough his tactics started to pay dividends as the wickets soon began to fall at regular intervals. We all performed well under pressure with Bunty making the breakthrough of the first wicket, Rocky & Harman then took the vital wickets of 2 boys who were on fifty, Mannu broke the innings as he swept up with 4 wickets and finally Vicky took the final wicket to seal victory in the 39th over.

A truly excellent team effort with everyone contributing. This is how cricket should be played with two similar matched teams who have the same banter and passion. The family battle was won by Babbu who beat his brother's, Sukhi's, team. It was a family affair played in the best of spirits.
