Elite v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
The hustle and bustle of the cricket season is in full swing and Sanj led Fabian's Legion along the dreaded A40 to the ever so popluar Perivale (best known for the Green Hoover Building). A nice day welcomed both team and going out to toss, the skipper who won was in the driving seat as the new ball would do wonders on such a green wicket.
Alas Sanj won the toss and elected to make use of the new ball first. The Argonauts instilled with Legionnaires (I know this doesnt sound too good so the wife & girlfriends need not worry) were ready to do what they were selected to do. Please dont say 'Eat Teas' since this is not their only talent.
To note and for reference later on in this fable; The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill that is based in 19th Victorian London. The main protagonist, amongst many others, are literary figures from famous Author's books of that time such as Allan Quartermain (King Solomon’s Mines by H. Rider Haggard), Lucy Harker (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), The Invisible Man (H.G. Wells), and Dr. Jeckyl as well as Mr. Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson), Captain Nemo complete with the Nautilus (Jules Verne), Fu Manchu (Sax Rohmer) and Moriarty (Shelock Holmes by Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle).
Onto another obscure and non-related point, A Padawan, Padawan learner, or Jedi Apprentice, was a child, who begins serious training under a Jedi Knight or a Jedi Master, chosen by the Knight or Master him/herself.
Back to the story at hand. Phoenix came out with all guns blazing as they whistled through Elite's top order as they slumped to thirty-six for six in just the eleventh over. Elite finally succumbed to eighty-eight all out with the highest score being extras on thirty-eight (twenty one wides). All the bowlers & fielders contributed in restricting the score but one needs to mention Dinesh for producing a fine display of seam bowling as the Elite batsmen were not able to handle his pace & movement and to Zee who dried up the runs as only one run came off his four overs.
At tea, Phoenix needed to bat sensisbly but based on what had happened in the Elite's innings this could be a tougher ask than first envisaged.
Phoenix came out to bat with the winning line not too far away and the game was all over in the seventeenth over as firstly Noman set up the win with a lovely twenty-six (which included five fours) and Gurpreet took us home as he smashed his way to an unbeaten forty-two (which included five fours and two sixes). The day unfolded with the performances and attitude of Phoenix's own 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' proved vital to the win.
Dinesh produced a match winning spell of bowling which has promoted him from Padawan to Full Padwal Jedi status and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Noman for passing the hundred runs mark for the season thus far.
Well done to Elite for being great hosts, providing tasty Masala Chai and enjoying & loving the game as much as Phoenix does. As for Phoenix, an excellent display which had its root in the desire to excel as a team.
No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined. Based on this, dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others.
To quote Tom Seaver (US Baseball Legend) 'The concentration and dedication - the intangibles are the deciding factors between who won and who lost'.
