Cove v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 21 Jun 2009 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets
Match report
The second game of the weekend was at the ever impressive Cove where the facilities were one of the best the Phoenix has seen with a great wicket, fast outfield, excellant changing rooms with balcony overlooking the pitch, outdoor matted nets and a lovely and well stocked pavillion. A warm day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, the Cove skipper asked Phoenix to bat first.
Phoenix got off to a disaterous start losing Rahul in the very first over and the day just went from bad to worse. To cut the painful story very short Phoenix were bowled out for one hundred and forty nine runs off just twenty five overs. Tushar played within himself for an easily made thirty-nine (which included five fours) as whe tried to setady the boat as wickets kept on falling at the other end. Ali then joined him and upped the run rate with a fast flowing forty-four (which included six fours and a six) but a rash moment cost him his wicket when his maiden Phoenix fifty was beckoning. Finally Anup helped Phoenix to a decent enough score with a concentrated twenty-three runs (which included four fours).
The madness in the shot selection of many of the players was unbelievable and it seems the Phoenix players were eyeing an IPL contract - the only problem was that Mr Lalit Modi was nowhere to be seen and it was 2020 cricket they were after then a short trip to Lord's was the order of the day to see Pakistan battle it out with Sri Lanka in the 2020 World Cup Final.
Anyway the Phoenix umpiring was very generous as leniency was shown on many wides and not one, not two but three LBW's being given. Unfortunately this was not recipricated as the Cove umpire was very harsh with offside wides especially and even harsher with LBW's as the batsmen missed balls that were allegedly hitting the middle of middle stump.
Cove after nineteen overs had scored forty-nine runs with just thirty runs coming off the bat but they went to victory with seven overs to spare with Extra's being the second highest score. Statistically Cover were fifty-three runs behind Phoenix at twenty-five overs but alas Phoenix has no one but themselves to blame for if we batted forty overs then victory would have been ours.
Rowdy produced an excellant display of fast bowling and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Tushar for passing two hundred runs & Ali for passing one hundred runs for the season thus far and to Ali for passing ten wickets for the for season thus far.
Well done to Cove. As for Phoenix, an embrassing defeat to game in which we should have won comfortablyand finally an Indian proverb 'Blaming your faults on your nature does not change the nature of your faults. Life's real failure is when you do not realise how close you were to success when you gave up so chin up and on to the next episode.
To quote Tao Te Ching written around the 6th century BC by the sage Laozi “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.”
