High Wycombe v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 23 Aug 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
The Roe Deer is primarily crepuscular, or primarily active during the twilight. As well as being very quick and graceful its mating season end in August. Our very own skipper is much alike the Roe Deer as on the cricket field he is quick between the wickets and graceful as he plays his shots but that is not where the comparison starts. It seems Fabian's mating season is also coming to a finish since he is making himself more available to play be it Nocturnally (Night) with known fait accompli or Diurnally (Day) for Phoenix.
So with Fabian leading from the front as where he should be, he once again on a very hot day led his Legion of Warriors to the short trip to the heath of flackwell for the match against High Wycombe. On winning the toss, Fabian had no hesitation to field first. Alas the Phoenix's fielding today was about the worst ever seen with all the bowlers being hit hard as miserable support permitted High Wycombe to run up about forty unearned runs. High Wycombe's Zaib made most of the opportunities he was presented as he hurt Phoenix with a well made sixty-five runs but the Phoenix bowlers stuck to their game plan and soon enough chipped away at the batting order. A small fight back at the end of the High Wycombe's innings saw Phoenix restrict the opposition to a score below two hundred but nonetheless a tough target to chase down.
At tea Phoenix knew they had let themselves down but also knew that a good start was required if they wanted to win the game. What happened next was to truly astounding as first Fabian destroyed the High Wycombe bowling attack with flawless power hitting as he unleashed his blade and demonstrated the trade mark Saverimuttu Drive. Fabian made a fabulous fifty-nine runs off just sixteen scoring shots as he blasted nine fours and a six. At the loss of his wicket Phoenix had reached fifty-nine runs of just six overs. Then in came Anuj. Anuj started where Fabian left off and soon got into his groove as he demolished the High Wycombe bowling attack with carefree timing as he hit the ball to all parts of the ground with relative ease. Anuj made a brilliant eighty-five runs off just thirty scoring shots as he blazed seven fours and a four sixes.
Phoenix hit the winning runs in just the twenty first over and thus sealed a terrific win. Fabian 'Chikna Chaddi Boy' Saverimuttu dropped his trousers once again but to everyone's surprise Nad was nowhere in sight. Now was this an accident or has this now become a habit but regardless if this is what it takes for Phoenix to win then Fabian keep on dropping those trousers.
The Return is a 2003 Russian film that tells the story of two teenage Russian boys whose father returns home suddenly after a twelve year absence. He takes the boys on a holiday to a remote island on a lake that turns into a test of manhood of almost mythic proportions. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Thus today's game saw the return of Cyrus and Richard for the first time this season as they both produced manly performances of mythical proportions. Cyrus clawed back the years to shouts of 'Chaminda Vaas World Class' as he bowled his left-arm specials at the death conceding just the single boundary and Richard showed his Gutsy Collingwood nature as he stuck in there like glue, he was part of a fifty runs partnership with Fabian and then a hundred runs partnership with Anuj.
Anuj showed his true batting prowess and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian for passing four hundred runs and Anuj for passing one hundred for the season thus far.
Well done to High Wycombe for a fun game and not losing heart. As for Phoenix, well done to producing a wonderful win when it seemed we had let ourselves down again. The team still needs to improve in where they are weak and this improvement comes from each individual and thus when the collective improves then so does the whole team.
To quote Maxwell Maltz (US plastic surgeon, motivational author, and creator of the Psycho-Cybernetics, 1927-2003) “Self-improvement is the name of the game, and your primary objective is to strengthen yourself, not to destroy an opponent”
