Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 5 runs

Match report Game 26 v The Journey Men!

Lost by 5 runs!

In a thrilling contest, Phoenix narrowly lost to The Journey Men by 5 runs in what was the second game between the two teams, leaving the series even at one win apiece. The camaraderie between the sides was evident, making the match highly competitive and enjoyable for both teams.

The Journey Men, having won the toss, elected to bat first and posted a total of 170 in their allotted 35 overs. Phoenix bowlers Mitul Bathia and Shantanu stood out, frequently troubling the opposition batsmen. Despite their efforts, Phoenix's fielding let them down, with three costly dropped chances off Sanjeev Kumar’s bowling, allowing the batting side to push towards a defendable total.

A special mention goes to Muhammad Chohan, who took a stunning catch, and Kay Hayat, who equalled the club's record for most run outs in a season with his fourth today.

As both teams broke for tea, Itmadin Vegdani’s Noor provided his signature Chicken and Veggie Biryani, which was happily devoured by all players, boosting morale ahead of Phoenix's chase.

Phoenix’s response, however, was off to a stuttering start. Wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing any meaningful partnerships from developing. By the time the score read 91-6, Phoenix found themselves in serious trouble. However, Khizar and Shantanu fought back, stitching together a crucial partnership to take the score to 140. Khizar was dismissed soon after, and Shantanu followed at 150, in what seemed like a controversial catch, with many believing the ball had bounced before it was taken at backward point.

With the score at 165-8, Phoenix needed just 5 runs from the remaining 15 balls. Mitul fell shortly after, and Sanjeev blocked out the final two balls of the over to give Vishal Ambersriya the strike for the next over.

The tension was palpable as the final two overs began, with Phoenix needing 5 runs for victory:

- **33.1**: Opi drove the full ball to extra cover, but Sanjeev refused the single, opting for Opi to face again.

- **33.2**: A short and wide ball offered an opportunity for Opi, who attempted to hit through mid-wicket. Unfortunately, he got a leading edge, resulting in a caught-and-bowled, sealing the win for The Journey Men.

It was excellent to see Jamie Odell opening the batting and playing for the very first time with his father, Simon. Phoenix is the place where dreams come true.

Welcoming to see Wendel J Sebastian playing for the Phoenix.

Vishal-Karna Kumar was at his energetic self and is showing the credentials needed to be a future captain.

Shantanu Rawat was deservedly named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, excelling with both bat and ball, as well as in the field.

Although Phoenix’s season ended in defeat, the match provided plenty of lessons, especially the importance of catching and holding nerve under pressure. With catching practice and mental resilience in critical moments, the team can build towards a stronger season next year.

POTM is Shantanu.
