Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 11 runs

Match report Game 8 v Holtwhites Trinibis - Lost by 11 runs

Phoenix CC suffered their second defeat of the season in a game that slipped through our fingers—quite literally—as we fell 11 runs short in a chase that should have been ours.

The day began under clear skies, a hot afternoon with a fast outfield and short boundaries, perfect conditions for runs. Holtwhites Trinibis took full advantage, posting 253 in their allotted overs. While it was a competitive score, our fielding performance turned it into an uphill task.

Simply put, we didn’t help ourselves:
• 7 dropped catches
• 3 missed run outs
• 1 missed stumping
• Multiple misfields, handing the opposition 30–40 extra runs

It was a harsh reminder that even on good batting days, cricket is won in the field.

At tea, we regrouped with clarity: we needed a flying start, a composed middle phase, and a big finish. And we got the start: 80-0 after just 9 overs, with intent, timing, and positivity. But what followed was a collapse that took the wind out of our sails—from 80-0 to 96-5 in the space of 7 overs. Five wickets for just 16 runs, and the momentum shifted brutally.

But Phoenix doesn’t fold quietly.

Khizar Hayat and Sam Sam rebuilt with grit and class, putting on a fighting 98-run partnership in 16 overs. Salman’s clean hitting was vital with all fielders pushed to the rope. His dismissal was the turning point—our finisher, gone when we needed the boundaries most. Khizar carried on the fight, joined by Shantanu Rawat, adding another 46 runs in 5 overs, but the required run rate kept inching up. With 14 needed off the final over, the odds were stacked against us, and we finished 11 short.

Kay Hayat’s 74 off 75 balls, with 11 boundaries, was a performance of quality and calm under pressure—a true Player of the Match effort that deserved more support.

Final thoughts:
This wasn’t a loss built on lack of skill—but on approach, focus, and attitude. The fielding effort, unfortunately, didn’t match the high standards we’ve set this season. Attitude over aptitude must remain our motto going forward.

With 6 wins from 8 games, we’re still in a strong position—but this match was a missed opportunity. Time to reflect, reset, and rise again. On to the next!
