Long Ditton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 06 Jul 2025 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 17 runs

Match report Game 11 v Long Ditton Cricket club - win by 17 runs!

A rain-affected clash saw Phoenix grind out a hard-fought 18-run victory, making it 8 wins from 11 outings, keeping the winning momentum alive.

First Innings – Phoenix Batting
The rain shortened the contest to 35 overs per side, and Phoenix, batting first, posted a competitive 189.

Standout batting performance:
Opening 68 run partnership by Jaykishan (37) and Chohan (42) gave us the foundation we needed.

Kay Hayat – classy and aggressive knock of 61 off 56 balls, including 6 fours and 2 sixes, providing much-needed impetus to the innings.

The total could have been higher, but the stop-start nature of the innings due to conditions made runs harder to come by.

Second Innings – Phoenix Bowling & Fielding
With 189 on the board, discipline with the ball and sharpness in the field were the orders of the day—but once again, for the second week running, Phoenix’s fielding standards slipped.

Key moments:
Two early breakthroughs gave Phoenix a solid start, including a stunning low left-handed catch in the gully by Sanjeev Kumar, arguably one of the catches of the season.

But despite the early pressure, Phoenix made life difficult for themselves with 48 extras conceded:
9 byes
5 leg byes
27 wides
7 no-balls

The ill-discipline kept Long Ditton in the contest, but the bowlers held their nerve.

Bowling highlights:
Ginni Dhaliwal – economical brilliance with figures of 7-2-14-0, keeping things tight and building pressure.

Sanjeev Kumar – Player of the Match performance with figures of 7-1-21-1, backed by sharp variations and relentless accuracy. The team rallied behind him with chants of “Come on Ash!” as he turned the screws on the opposition. Extremely unlucky not to add more wickets to his tally.

Despite some self-inflicted pressure, Phoenix ultimately held firm to seal the win by 18 runs.

Final thoughts:
The team continues to rack up wins, but there’s no hiding from the fact that extras and fielding errors nearly cost us this one.

Positives include:
Another valuable win under pressure
Strong individual performances from Khizar, Ginni, and Sanjeev
Team fighting spirit remains high

Plenty to reflect on—discipline with the ball and fielding intensity need raising if we’re to maintain momentum.

But a win’s a win—8 from 10, and the Phoenix march continues!

Debut for Karan Rauli.
