Result: Lost by 113 runs

Phoenix and The Journey Men have built a wonderful rivalry over the years. Every fixture is played in great spirit, with plenty of laughter, friendly banter and mutual respect. Today was no different—but on the cricketing front, The Journey Men were deserved winners.

Losing the toss, The Journey Men batted first and immediately showed the value of playing as a collective. Every player contributed, whether with the bat, ball, in the field or simply by encouraging teammates. It was a performance built on togetherness.

For Phoenix, however, fielding once again proved to be our Achilles’ heel.

Despite two outstanding catches—Sunny holding a superb chance at long-off and Sanjeev taking an excellent catch at deep extra cover—the overall fielding lacked the standards we expect. Dropped catches, misfields, poor anticipation and lapses in positioning allowed the opposition to keep building partnerships. Good ground fielding doesn’t always appear on the scorecard, but it creates pressure, lifts bowlers and changes games. Today, too many easy singles were gifted away, releasing that pressure and allowing The Journey Men to dictate proceedings.

The Journey Men closed on 194 from 35 overs, with around 30 runs effectively gifted through our fielding and extras.

Needing 195 to win, Phoenix never found any momentum.

The batting innings mirrored the fielding display. Poor shot selection, rushed execution, little strike rotation and some unfortunate umpiring decisions meant wickets fell regularly. Extras finished as our highest scorer with 14, while only one Phoenix batsman reached double figures as we were dismissed for 81 in just 18.1 overs, suffering a comprehensive 113-run defeat.

There were, however, positives to take away. Debuts for Sunny, Gurjeet, Zeya and Shoaib added fresh faces to the club, while Shoaib produced an exciting spell of fast bowling that suggests plenty more is to come.

A hugely promising debut. Shoaib bowled with genuine pace, energy and aggression to claim 2 wickets, showing the attributes of a bowler with an exciting future at Phoenix.

Final Thoughts:
Today wasn’t about losing—it was about how we lost.
The standards we have set over the years weren’t visible. Cricket rewards teams that work together, communicate, concentrate and compete for every ball. Too often today we looked like eleven individuals rather than one united team.
Every player should reflect honestly on their own performance before looking elsewhere. Desire, awareness, discipline and putting the team first have always been the foundations of Phoenix Cricket Club. Those qualities haven’t disappeared—we simply need to rediscover them.
The season is far from over, but improvement starts with accountability. If we commit to doing the basics well and supporting one another again, the results will follow.
