Phoenix Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report Game 12 v Windsor
Result: Won by 1 wicket

Some cricket matches are won comfortably. Others are remembered forever.

Against the backdrop of Windsor Castle, Phoenix produced one of the most dramatic victories in the club’s history, overcoming pressure, tension, nerves and an inspired Windsor side to claim victory with just one wicket to spare.

Windsor won the toss and, without hesitation, elected to bat on a scorching summer’s day.

They made an excellent start, reaching 86 before losing their first wicket, and at the halfway stage were well placed on 97-2. Phoenix needed something special to halt the momentum, and Adnan Wadood delivered with a superb double-wicket over that slowed the innings and gave Phoenix renewed belief.

Even then Windsor looked destined for a score well beyond 200, but the game turned dramatically.
From 136-2, Phoenix produced an outstanding fightback to dismiss Windsor for 182.

The turning point came through brilliant fielding as Mahd Khan effected the crucial run out of Windsor’s captain, who had looked completely in control. From there the pressure mounted, with Salman Merchant and Sanjeev Kumar sharing six wickets between them, taking three apiece, while catches from Mahd, Muhammad Chohan, Iliyan Panjwani and Khizar Hayat ensured every opportunity was taken.

At tea, Phoenix were grateful for the shade and Itmadin Vegdani’s famous chicken biryani, while discussing a simple chase plan: Stay ahead of the rate. Build partnerships. Don’t lose wickets in clusters.

The chase began poorly as Ali Rizvi departed in just the second over.

Captain Muhammad Chohan and Khizar Hayat steadied the innings, keeping the scoreboard moving at around seven runs an over. Khizar was magnificent, striking 61 from just 53 balls, including 10 fours and a six, placing Phoenix firmly in control.

At drinks Phoenix were 142-5, needing just 41 more runs with five wickets remaining.

Victory looked within touching distance.

Then came the collapse.

Windsor refused to surrender, producing a remarkable spell that reduced Phoenix from 158-5 to 171-9, claiming four wickets for just 13 runs and turning a comfortable chase into a nerve-shredding finish.

With 12 runs still required, number eleven Sanjeev Kumar joined Adnan Wadood at the crease. Overs were plentiful. Composure was not.

Adnan showed immense courage and discipline, occupying the crease with a determined 7 from 43 balls, frustrating the bowlers and refusing to panic. Alongside him, Sanjeev remained calm under immense pressure as the pair slowly chipped away at the target, one run—and one over—at a time.

Five overs of concentration. Five overs of belief.

In the 30th over, Sanjeev threaded a boundary between wicketkeeper and gully to reduce the equation.
Just two runs remained.

The next over was a maiden as Adnan absorbed every delivery.

Then came the moment. In the 31st over, Sanjeev swept the leg-spinner behind square for four. Game over.

Phoenix players rushed onto the field as hugs, relief and celebrations followed one of the club’s finest finishes.
The final-wicket partnership between Adnan Wadood and Sanjeev Kumar will be remembered not for the number of runs scored, but for the courage, composure and belief shown under immense pressure.

Player of the Match: Sanjeev Kumar
A complete all-round performance.
• 8-1-36-3 with the ball.
• 9 off 13 balls*, including the winning boundary.
• Calm, composed and fearless when the pressure reached its highest.

Final Thoughts:
Cricket has a wonderful way of rewarding belief.

When the pressure rises, talent alone isn’t enough. Character, patience and trust in your teammate become the difference.

Phoenix showed all three.

From collapsing with the bat to standing firm when it mattered most, this was a victory built on resilience. Every player had a part to play, but it was the refusal to give in that defined the day.

Victories like these build far more than league records—they build confidence, togetherness and belief that no game is ever lost until the final wicket falls.

Record so far:
7 Wins | 4 Losses | 1 Draw
