Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 13 runs

Match report Game 19 v Actonians
Result: Lost by 13 runs

So near, yet so far.

For the second successive week, Phoenix found themselves in a position where victory was within touching distance, only for the game to slip away through missed opportunities and a late batting collapse.
There was, however, one special moment before a ball was bowled: Opi Singh captained Phoenix for the very first time. A proud occasion for both Opi and the club.

A Tale of Missed Opportunities
After an early breakthrough from Shoaib Hamker, Phoenix had opportunities to put Actonians under serious pressure. Unfortunately, five dropped catches allowed the opposition to recover and build momentum.
Actonians reached 106-1 after 19 overs, putting Phoenix on the back foot.

But then came the fightback.

Sanjeev Kumar made the breakthrough and began a remarkable collapse. His four wickets, combined with Salman Merchant’s three wickets and Opi Singh’s two, saw Phoenix rip through the Actonians batting line-up.

From 106-1, Actonians lost nine wickets for just 49 runs in 18 overs.

The fielding also produced some excellent individual performances:
* Gurpreet Singh Chandi — 4catches
* Khizar Hayat — 3 catches
* Shoaib Hamker & Zeya Uddin — 1 catch

However, cricket is a game of fine margins.

The final wicket proved particularly costly. Opi appeared to have taken the wicket, only for the delivery to be called a no-ball. Actonians went on to add another 10 runs before eventually being bowled out.
In a match eventually lost by just 13 runs, those 10 runs proved crucial.

The Chase That Got Away
Phoenix’s batting chase ultimately followed a familiar and frustrating pattern.

Khizar Hayat stood firm with an excellent 41 off 45 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes, but unfortunately lacked the support required at the other end.

Yet Phoenix were still firmly in the contest.

At 135-6 after 31 overs, with Ali Raza and Salman Merchant looking comfortable at the crease, Phoenix required just 20 runs from the remaining 9 overs.

Victory was there. Then came the collapse.
Phoenix lost their final four wickets for just six runs in four overs, turning a highly achievable chase into another painful defeat.

There were careless shots, a no need run-out, and some outstanding catches from the opposition.

Today’s loss really hurts. We should have won.

Player of the Match: Gurpreet Singh Chandi
Four catches behind the stumps, a superb individual effort An outstanding performance from Gurpreet, who was constantly involved throughout the innings and ensured Phoenix’s bowling fightback was supported by some exceptional wicketkeeping.

Final Thoughts
We have lost that winning feeling

The frustrating reality is that in recent defeats against Journeymen, Prestcold, Hampton Woodlawn and now Actonians, Phoenix have often looked like the better bowling side.

The issue has increasingly been the batting.

Not having our strongest and most consistent batsmen available week after week has made a difference. Cricket is a team game, but regular selection builds understanding, confidence and consistency.

More players playing regularly will help restore that rhythm.

The camaraderie is there.
The team spirit is there.
The effort is there.

Now we need to rediscover the winning way. There are five games remaining this season.

Let’s reset. Learn from the mistakes. Play with confidence and finish the season strongly. The result hurts, but the season isn’t over. Five games. Five opportunities. Time to rise again.

RISE • BELIEVE • ACHIEVE
