Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 4 runs

Match report Game 20 v Stoke D'Abernon
Result: Lost 4 runs

Another heartbreaking finish for Phoenix, as a continuous theme from recent weeks continued — the team doing so much right, getting themselves into winning positions, but ultimately not managing to get over the line.

Today, Salman Merchant captained Phoenix for the first time.

A Strong Start with the Ball:
Asked to field first, Phoenix came out firing.

Stoke D’Abernon were reduced to 5-2 after just 3 overs, with both openers back in the pavilion. Phoenix then pushed further, reducing the opposition to 43-4, and the confidence was high.

However, a few crucial mistakes at crucial moments allowed Stoke D’Abernon to recover and build their innings. With a fast outfield and an excellent batting track, they eventually reached 207-8 from their 40 overs.

The run chase was very much on.

Phoenix in the Chase:
The message was simple: bat sensibly, rotate the strike, keep the scoreboard moving and punish the loose deliveries. And for much of the innings, that is exactly what Phoenix did.

At the halfway stage, Stoke D’Abernon were 88-5, while Phoenix were sitting comfortably at 112-2 — requiring just 5.6 runs per over to win.

The game was firmly in our hands. Then came the crucial passage of play.

Overs 21-25:
1, 2, 3 + wicket, 0, 3
9 runs from 5 overs — just 1.8 RPO.

Overs 26-30:
5, 9, 4, 7, 3 + wicket
28 runs from 5 overs

Overs 31-35:
2, 11, 4, 5, 5
27 runs from 5 overs

Going into the final five, Phoenix needed to accelerate — and there was still a chance.

The Final Five:
Over 36: 5 runs — 27 required
Over 37: 2 runs + wicket — 25 required
Over 38: 8 runs + 2 wickets — 17 required
Over 39: 6 runs + wicket — 11 required
Over 40: 6 runs + wicket

Phoenix finished just 4 runs short. A game that had been in our control had slipped away.

One statistic perhaps summed it up: after the 19th over, Phoenix managed just five fours in the next five overs.

The pressure created by the scoreboard began to tell.

Player of the Match: Khizar Hayat
A hard-fought 52 from 84 balls, including 5 fours.

Khizar battled throughout and reached a well-deserved half-century. However, fatigue eventually set in and his scoring rate dropped at a crucial stage. From 149-4 to 191-8, Phoenix struggled to maintain the momentum needed, with Khizar contributing just two runs after reaching his fifty.

It was a determined effort, but unfortunately the innings couldn’t provide the acceleration Phoenix needed at the finish.

Final Thoughts
The difference today was not ability — it was handling the pressure when the winning line was in sight.
Once again, Phoenix created an excellent position. We reduced the opposition to 43-4. We had them 88-5 at halfway. We were 112-2 in our chase.

But when the game was there to be won, we put pressure on ourselves. That is becoming the biggest challenge for us.

We have lost that winning feeling. But this is exactly when we need to stick together, learn from these tight defeats and keep believing.

RISE • BELIEVE • ACHIEVE
One team. One club. One Phoenix.
