Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 7 wickets

Match report Game 22 v Brockham Green
Result: Lost by 7 wickets

On an overcast day, with a green pitch offering plenty of movement and a slow surface making stroke-making difficult, Phoenix found themselves facing a challenging task from the outset.

Chohan won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that initially looked questionable as Phoenix struggled to get going, managing just 19 runs from the opening eight overs. The combination of swing, seam and a slow wicket made batting particularly difficult.

But credit to the team for fighting their way back into the game.

Phoenix eventually posted 195 from 35 overs, with Khizar Hayat providing the foundation for the innings. His excellent 67 from 76 balls, including 7 fours and 3 sixes, gave the innings much-needed stability. He was well supported by Iliyan Panjwani (30) and Bunty Singh (24).

However, wickets at crucial moments prevented Phoenix from accelerating further. With a few more partnerships and some composure through the middle overs, 220-plus was certainly within reach.

The Brockham Green Chase
At tea, the message was clear: start tightly, control the run rate and put pressure on the opposition.

Unfortunately, Phoenix couldn’t achieve the start they needed.

After the equivalent of eight overs, Brockham Green had reached 46-0, putting themselves firmly in control of the chase.

Sanjeev eventually came into the attack in the 13th over and immediately made an impact, removing one of the opening batsmen. He bowled an excellent spell, finishing with 7-0-20-1, but unfortunately couldn’t find enough support from the other end.

Brockham Green ultimately reached the target with 15 balls to spare, winning by seven wickets.

A Special Phoenix Moment
One of the highlights of the day came from Tej, Bunty’s son, who showed plenty of confidence and gusto with the bat. Even better, he then took a catch off his dad’s bowling — a fantastic cricketing moment and one that will undoubtedly be remembered by both of them.

The LBW Debate
There was also a talking point surrounding an LBW decision.

Phoenix gave their own player, Vishal-Karna Kumar, out when he was beginning to settle, while an LBW appeal against a Brockham Green batsman, who appeared to be trapped on the back foot in front of the stumps, was not given.

The Brockham Green captain subsequently acknowledged that the batsman was clearly out but had not reversed the decision while at the crease.

These moments can influence a game, although whether this particular decision ultimately changed the result is impossible to say.

Player of the Match: Khizar Hayat
A superb innings when Phoenix needed someone to stand up and take responsibility. Khizar held the innings together and gave Phoenix a total that, at the halfway stage, we believed could be defended.

Final Thoughts
The battle may have been lost, but we stand side by side at all times.

Was the toss decisive? Perhaps bowling first might have been the better option given the overcast conditions and green pitch.

Was the LBW decision decisive? It’s impossible to know.

Ultimately, the better side won on the day.

We play fair. We respect the opposition. We respect the game. Sometimes that isn’t reciprocated, but that should never change the values we bring to the cricket field.

There are still games to play, lessons to learn and plenty to be proud of.
