Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 3 runs

Match report Game 23 v Kempton Cricket Club!

Lost by 3 runs.

n a fiercely contested local rivalry, Phoenix fell agonizingly short, losing by just 3 runs to Kempton in what proved to be a thrilling encounter. This was the second game in their ongoing series, with Phoenix having comfortably won the first match. However, Game 2 was a different story, ending in heartbreak for Phoenix as they failed to secure a boundary on the final ball that would have clinched the win.

On a scorching day, Phoenix lost the toss and were put in to field. Kempton got off to a flying start, with their opening pair amassing over 100 runs for the first wicket. The breakthrough came through a sharp piece of fielding by Sanjeev, who induced a run out of the non-striker. This dismissal sparked a Phoenix fightback, as they managed to restrict Kempton to 154 for 5 in 28 overs. Sanjeev Kumar was particularly impressive with the ball, finishing with figures of 7-0-30-1.

However, the game swung dramatically when Kempton’s overseas star unleashed a devastating assault, hammering 82 runs in just 5 overs. The final 10 overs yielded a staggering 101 runs, leaving Phoenix with a daunting target to chase.

At the tea break, with Itmadin Vegdani’s Noor Chicken Biryani fueling the team, Phoenix knew they had to bat exceptionally well. They started strongly, with the first wicket falling at 75 in the 10th over. Harman Johal looked poised for a big score but succumbed to the pressure of sledging, departing for 49 off 27 balls, an innings that included 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Jeeta Dhillon and Vishal Singh then steadied the ship with a crucial 87-run partnership over the next 11 overs. Jeeta Dhillon played superbly, scoring 51 off 41 balls, including 8 fours and a six, before he was dismissed. However, a flurry of wickets put Phoenix on the back foot as the target loomed large.

The final stages of the match were tense. With 25 runs needed off the last two overs, Sanjeev came to the crease and safely saw off the final ball of the 33rd over. The 34th over saw a mixed bag from Vishal-Karna Kumar, who managed to score 11 runs, leaving 14 needed from the final over.

The last over was a nail-biter. After two dot balls, Vishal-Karna Kumar smashed a six, followed by a wide and a two, leaving Phoenix needing 4 runs to win off the final delivery. Unfortunately, a well-executed back-of-the-length delivery from Garcha saw Vishal unable to clear the infield, resulting in just a single. Vishal remained unbeaten on 53 off 37 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes, earning the Player of the Match award despite the loss.

The match had a touching moment with father and son, Sanjeev and Vishal, batting together in the closing stages, showing the spirit of the game. However, a sour note was struck when Kempton’s overseas player, despite his impressive performance, failed to shake hands with Sanjeev, Phoenix’s founder, an act viewed as disrespectful and arrogant.

In the end, Kempton held on for a narrow victory, but the match was a brilliant display of competitive cricket. Phoenix will look to bounce back in the next encounter, with plenty of positives to take from their valiant chase.
