Match report
Game 9 v Holtwhites Trinibis
Result: Won by 46 runs
Phoenix Conquer Their Hoodoo as Belief Defeats Holtwhites Trinibis.
Going into this fixture, Phoenix knew the challenge ahead.
Since 2024, Holtwhites Trinibis had proven to be a difficult opponent, with Phoenix losing both previous encounters. Facing one of the strongest sides on our fixture list, the plan was simple: win the toss, bat first and post 250+. It wouldn’t guarantee victory, but it would give us something substantial to defend.
Part one of the mission was accomplished.
Captain Muhammad Chohan won the toss and elected to bat. Phoenix responded with a disciplined batting performance, posting an impressive 255.
There were valuable contributions throughout the order, with partnerships ensuring the scoreboard kept moving. The standout innings came from Vishal-Karna Kumar, who unleashed an attacking masterclass, scoring 69 from just 48 balls, including 11 fours and a six. Of his 69 runs, an incredible 50 came in boundaries as he shifted momentum firmly in Phoenix’s favour.
At tea, the discussion centred around one thing: discipline.
The message was clear. There would be periods when the game drifted away from us, but we had to absorb pressure, stay patient and remain in the contest.
The start with the ball could not have been better.
Ashik Khokhar and Mitul Bathia struck early, reducing Holtwhites to 26-2 and putting Phoenix firmly on top.
However, quality opposition fought back.
A century partnership developed as boundaries flowed freely and a couple of chances went begging. By the 20-over drinks break, Holtwhites appeared to have seized control and many heads began to drop.
This was the pivotal moment.
In the huddle, Sanjeev Kumar reminded the team that the game was far from over. The opposition still required more than seven runs an over. We were behind, but certainly not beaten. What was needed was belief — and perhaps a little magic.
Both arrived immediately after drinks.
First came Adnan Wadood. Bowling to the dangerous Shepherd, already on 60, he induced a pull shot that looked destined to sail for six over cow corner.
Then came the moment of the match.
From mid-on, Ashik Khokhar sprinted across the field and produced a sensational running catch, plucking the ball from the air and igniting Phoenix’s belief.
One over later, Mitul struck again, bowling Hughes for 61.
In the space of two overs, the opposition’s two set batsmen were gone.
Suddenly the energy transformed.
Voices grew louder. Shoulders lifted. Every player sensed an opportunity.
Phoenix then produced one of its most disciplined bowling and fielding displays of the season. The run rate tightened, pressure mounted and wickets fell regularly.
Adnan, Salman and Ashik combined brilliantly to finish the job as Holtwhites were restricted and Phoenix secured a memorable 46-run victory.
This was not just a win. It was a statement.
A victory built on resilience, belief and the refusal to surrender when momentum had swung away from us.
Player of the Match: Adnan Wadood
A superb spell under immense pressure, finishing with 4 wickets on a batting-friendly surface. His breakthrough after drinks changed the course of the game and sparked the collapse that followed.
Final Thoughts:
This was one of the best wins of the season.
We scored big when it mattered and, more importantly, we handled pressure when the game appeared to be slipping away. These are the victories that show what a team is truly made of.
There are still areas for improvement, and we know we can become even more competitive. The applause and appreciation belong to everyone involved. Well played, Phoenix.
Also a warm Phoenix welcome to Punit Chauhan, who made his club debut.
Record so far:
6 Wins | 2 Losses | 1 Draw
