After two closely contested matches in successive weeks, Phoenix once again found themselves on the wrong side of a tight finish. The margins were fine, but this contest was unfortunately overshadowed by inconsistent umpiring and prolonged disputes over the Laws of Cricket, which detracted from what was otherwise an enjoyable game. Phoenix maintained their composure throughout, choosing to play with respect for both the game and its spirit.

Losing the toss, Phoenix were sent into bat first on a pitch that demanded patience and positive footwork. The innings was built around a series of useful partnerships, with contributions coming throughout the batting order as the team posted 185 from their 35 overs.

The surface rewarded those willing to get onto the front foot, making stroke play against the moving ball far easier. Unfortunately, Phoenix repeatedly fell into the trap of playing from the crease, with seven wickets falling to deliveries played on the back foot, preventing the innings from accelerating towards the end.

The standout batting performance came from Khizar Hayat, who produced another classy innings of 65 from 66 balls, striking 11 boundaries with his usual blend of timing and composure.

At tea, the message was clear: bowl disciplined lines and lengths, remain patient, and create opportunities through sustained pressure.

The bowlers responded superbly.

At the halfway drinks break, Magdalen were 71-5 after 17 overs, leaving Phoenix firmly in control. Opi Singh and Shoaib Hamkar bowled with outstanding discipline, combining for figures of 14-4-48-4, asking constant questions of the batters and giving Phoenix every chance of victory.

However, cricket often turns on partnerships.

Magdalen’s middle order absorbed the pressure before producing two decisive stands of 56 and 40, gradually taking control of the chase. Those partnerships proved to be the defining moments of the afternoon as the hosts reached their target with four wickets in hand and ten balls remaining.

Player of the Match: Zeya Uddin
A memorable milestone for Zeya, claiming his first wickets for Phoenix Cricket Club. He bowled with courage under pressure, gave everything for the team and picked up two valuable wickets in an impressive performance.
