Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 45 runs

Match report Game 16 v Hampton Woodlawn
Result: Lost by 45 runs

A valiant effort, but just short of the mark.

It took plenty of effort and hard work behind the scenes this week to get a team out, with many of our regulars unavailable for one reason or another.

Sanjeev, already nursing a back injury, wasn’t originally going to play. But a last-minute dropout meant he stepped up for the team — with a little help from plenty of painkillers!

It was the second meeting of the season with Hampton Woodlawn, and unfortunately it wasn’t a repeat of our first encounter — this time with Hampton Woodlawn taking the points. The season series now stands at one win apiece. Will there be a decider?

Hampton Woodlawn got off to a strong start, reaching 70-0 after 10 overs before Davinder Singh provided the breakthrough. A good catch in the deep from Salman.

Ali Raza then produced a superb spell on debut, finishing with 7-0-29-4, troubling the Hampton Woodlawn batsmen with his control and variations.

Sanjeev also made a significant contribution, taking 3 wickets, a stunning one-handed diving catch at first slip and a run-out — contributing to five dismissals in total.

Despite the wickets, Phoenix couldn’t quite contain the scoring rate. Hampton Woodlawn continued to build momentum, while a few missed opportunities in the field proved costly.

Four missed chances involving two batsmen who went on to score 108 runs between them ultimately made a significant difference.

Hampton Woodlawn posted a challenging total and Phoenix knew a strong start would be essential.

Phoenix began the chase positively, reaching 63-1 after 11 overs and looking comfortable.

But the momentum suddenly shifted.

We lost four wickets for just 14 runs in five overs, before another three wickets fell in the 23rd over.

From being in a position where the chase looked achievable, Phoenix were suddenly fighting to stay in the game.
The boys continued to battle, with a cameo of reverse sweeps by Ramandeep, but ultimately we were bowled out 45 runs short of the target.

A few missed opportunities and one difficult spell with the bat were the difference between the two sides.
Debuts for Ali Raza, Davinder Singh & Ramandeep Singh.

Player of the Match: Ali Raza
A superb four-wicket haul on debut. Ali showed excellent control and variation throughout his spell, consistently troubling the Hampton Woodlawn batsmen.

Final Thoughts
It’s been a tough season and a challenging few months, with player availability proving to be a major obstacle in consistently putting out the same team.

We’ve also been missing some of the experienced players who have contributed so much to Phoenix over the years and helped establish the standards we strive for.

But the boys don’t allow that to hamper or dampen their confidence, enthusiasm or passion for the game.
In fact, it’s bonded the team even more.

We play to win. But we also play with the values that define Phoenix — togetherness, respect and enjoyment.
Whatever the result, we continue to turn up, compete and support each other.
