Fulmer v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 70 runs
Match report
So onto the first of three games over the bank holiday weekend with the visit to Fulmer where a year ago Amrit 'Singh is King' had the boys bhangra dancing in the field with his first etch into the Phoenix Hall of Fame.
Anyway 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' is a television quiz show which offers very large cash prizes for correctly answering 12 or 15 consecutive multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. If at any point the contestant is unsure of the answer to a question, he or she can use one or more "lifelines". After using lifelines, contestants can either answer the question, use another lifeline, or walk away and keep the money. Each lifeline can only be used once and are as follows:
Fifty-Fifty: The contestant asks the host to have the computer randomly eliminate two of the incorrect answer choices, leaving the contestant with a choice between the correct answer and one incorrect one).
Ask the Audience: The contestant asks the studio audience which answer they believe is correct.
Phone-A-Friend: Contestants may call one pre-arranged friends
Picking the side for this fixture was nothing less than 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' since the number of times we had to call to ask players to play and the basis of their answers didnt gaurantee if they would play or not. At midnight the night before the game the final eleven was eventully sorted and come one 'o' clock the next afternoon of the game two people decided they didnt want to play.
The boys got their phones at the ready as continous calls of Phone-A-Friend and Ask the Audience were made but eventually Phoenix managed to get a team out. As you can see that was not a good start and with a depleted batting side Sanj gathered the troops and headed off towards Slough and to the timed match versus Fulmer. Sanj with due consideration offered the choice of batting first to the opposition who gladly accepted the invitation.
Phoenix came out on the field with the usual enthusiasm and energy associated with them and honour & pride was the order of the day regardless of the result. Phoenix bowled with passion and their fielding was top notch as in the very first few overs they had Fulmer under pressure with Rowdy bowling with good pace and new boy David with good movement.
Soon enough Phoenix made the breakthrough via a good take by Indi behind the stumps and an awesome sharp low catch by Ali in the overs. Phoenix were on top as Fulmer were sixty for five but then in came their best two batsman who then weathered the storm and then started to rebuild thier innings. Fulmer were eventually bowled out for one hundred and seventy four with David bowling very well as he finished with five wickets to his name.
The only bizarre moment was the coming and going of Iklass but who cares as we can sing-a-long with Eddy Grant:
"I don't wanna dance, dance with you baby nomore.
I'll never do something to hurt you though
Oh but the feeling is bad, the feeling is bad".
At tea Phoenix knew they gave Fulmer a scare with their bowling performance and settled down to tea, sandwiches, savoury snakes and lots of cake. The question everyone was joking was would tea last longer or the Phoenix innings.
Phoenix opened their account with Bob and Anup at the crease and looked solid for the first eight overs. The high level of concentration needed wasnt helped by the hot day and suddenly Phoenix looked in trouble at thirty for four off just eleven overs. In stepped Imran who then decided that attack was the best form of defence and soon went after the Fulmer bowling, He slapped, bashed and biffed his way to a his maiden fifty as he found the boundary with ease as he hit eight fours and a six.
With the final twenty overs in play and eighty-fours runs needed for victory the game could go either way but alas with Imran's dismissal the victory faded away. Phoenix fought hard to the end but with five overs remaining Sanj was eventually out as Phoenix could not hold on for a draw.
Imran with his bubbly nature had everyone smiling as well as giving Fulmer something to worry about as he batted and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Anup for passing one hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to Fulmer for a fun game and enjoying & being part of some of the funniest banter. As for Phoenix, well done for maintaining the respect and acclaim we attain from our opponents through our friendship which is binded by good spirited nature and fun loving attitude. To quote In the end we are all separate: our stories, no matter how similar, come to a fork and diverge. We are drawn to each other because of our similarities, but it is our differences we must learn to respect.
To quote Cyril Connolly (English critic and editor, 1903-1974) “The friendships which last are those wherein each friend respects the other's dignity to the point of not really wanting anything from him”
