Phoenix Cricket Club - Poole 2018

Poole 2018

Following the Saxon invasion of southern Britain in the 7th century, Poole was included in the newly established Kingdom of Wessex. Poole was used as a base for fishing and a place for ships to anchor on their way to Wareham, an important Saxon stronghold. A Danish Viking army captured Wareham in 876 but they were besieged and defeated by a Saxon army led by Alfred the Great. The Danish fleet retreated though Poole Harbour but most of their longships sank in a violent storm off the coast of Poole Bay and Studland. The Danes returned to England under Canute the Great in 1015. He led his fleet to Poole Harbour which he used as a base to pillage the surrounding settlements of Wessex before returning along the coast to attack London.

So the Phoenix boys found their little watering hole with no one was lost as we travelled down from London. Three days for the Phoenix army to pillage and drink into merriment and fun with cricket the last thing on our minds.

Phoenix on tour are a team full of laughter and comedy. To quote Mark Twain (AmericanHumoristWriter and Lecturer1835-1910), "
Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place."

So another tour came & passed and yet again Phoenix showed their true colours and infected everyone involved with laughter, spirit and the sense of being a family.
