Barnes Occasionals v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 09 May 2010 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 82 runs
Match report
Last weekends results with two defeats was a bitter pill to swallow and thus Phoenix needed to up their 'game' to get back to winning ways. With the 2010 election coming to a close could Phoenix also bounce back to power at Barnes.
Under a parliamentary system of government, a hung parliament (also known as a minority parliament, a balanced parliament or a parliament under no overall control) is a legislature in which no political party has an absolute majority of seats. In this election that would require one party to win 326 seats out of 650. To resolve a hung parliament will usually result in either a coalition government, a minority government – or even a dissolution of parliament and a fresh election. Since the elections of 1929, there have been two general elections that resulted in hung parliaments in the UK. The first was the result of the election in February 1974 and lasted until the October election that year. The second was the May 2010 election - after this years general election, the Tories won 306 seats and a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition was created to govern the UK.
Also totally unrelate is the cobweb model or cobweb theory which is an economic model that explains why prices might be subject to periodic fluctuations in certain types of markets. It describes cyclical supply and demand in a market where the amount produced must be chosen before prices are observed. Producers' expectations about prices are assumed to be based on observations of previous prices. Nicholas Kaldor analyzed the model in 1934, coining the term 'cobweb theorem' (see Pashigian, 2008), citing previous analyses in German by Henry Schultz and U. Ricci.
Enough of this politcal & economical hogwash and onto the game at hand. Afte a frought week with Ashford cancelling our fixture with themselves we found new opposition in the form of Barnes Occassionals. A cold, dreary and not a very pleasant day welcomed both teams with the opposition captain asking Fabian to bat first.
The Phoenix batsman brushed of the cobwebs in their batting armoury and set about creating their own theories in a run totalling model. The model here is simple in that if there is a demand from the team that boundaries are needed then the Phoenix batsman have no choice but to supply.
On a very tricky pitch where the ball was not coming onto the bat and had uneven bounce Fabian smashed his way to sixty-six runs which included nine fours and two sixes, Jay battered his way to forty-one runs which included nine fours, Rahul equistely made thirty-eight which included seven fours and Nad with consumate ease made twenty-nine runs which included six fours. At tea, Phoenix had declared on one hundred and ninety five off just twenty nine overs.
Phoenix came out to bowl knowing that they had the firepower to contain the opposition batsman but could they muster up the magic to gain a victory. Sofian came out of the traps with raw fire and gave Phoenix the perfect start has he made the breakthrough taking three quick wickets and soon after Barnes were on the backfoot.
The Barnes batsman then got their heads down as they battled hard in defending out for a draw. With the final twenty overs starting Fabian mixed up the bowling in trying to get the breakthrough since Phoenix needed five wicket more and the rain being not too far away. The game was in t he balance and like a hubng parliment no one was sure on what the outcome would be but Phoenix have a coalition of brothers that have stood the test of time and each others patience. Then five pieces of brilliance came to the fore that won us the game with six overs remaining.
Firstly Sofian balls a beauty of a ball which the batsman goes for and then Rahul takes a stunning chance at first slip as he catches a ball flying at speed behind him. Secondly Nad produces a brillant over as his spin and pace deceives the batsmen as he takes a hattrick. Finally Ali bowls a full ball outside the off stump tempting the batsman who throws all but the kitchen sink at it and then Fabian takes a brillant one handed catch in the cover region to win the game for Phoenix.
The man of the match award goes to Nad for his hattrick that won us the match. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Rahul who took a crackerjack of a catch at first slip as he caught the
ball behind him. A special mention to Fabian for passing hundred runs for the season thus far and to Nad for passing the hundred wicket mark for the club. A special thanks to Barnes for having fun and enjoying a good drink in bar with us after the game . As for Phoenix, great teamwork was the key to success.
To quote Joe Paterno (American Football coach, b.1924) “When a team outgrows individual performance and learns team confidence, excellence becomes a reality.”
