Old Owens/Myddelton House v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 16 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 6 runs
Match report
Lost to Old Owens by 6 runs. On losing the toss Phoenix were asked to field first and the bowling impressed as we kept the run rate down less than 3 runs per over. The story of the innings were the many dropped catches, of relatively easy chances, as we gave lives to the same two batsmen where one was dropped twice in one over & the other dropped on his first ball and all of Sanj's bowling. They rode their luck & being very decent batsmen they went on and smashed 76 off 7 overs. At tea, Old Owens made 195 and we were wondering how that came to be.
So on to the batting which was a two part affair. Part One was Sethi & Jay hitting the groove as they went about their business with relative ease putting on 79 for the 2nd wicket as we cruised to 89 for 1 in just 15 overs. Sethi was out with a run a ball 33 (which included 3 fours & 2 sixes) and before Jay fell after making 61 off 37 balls (which included 10 fours & 2 sixes) we were 117 for 2 off 19 overs. We were cruising.
Part Two was that off nerves and wickets falling constantly to point when Sanj came out to face we need 25 to win with 6 overs to spare. The pressure built and built but Mannu hit one big six and soon enough in the penultimate over we need 13 to win. Mannu first ball hit another six and the target was 7. The next ball was a long hop and Mannu swivelled and the ball looked like crossing the boundary for another maximum when the opening bat pulled off a magnificent one handed running diving catch on the line.
We lost the game but the old adage still goes 'catches win matches' were we dropped so many we lost count and Old Owens held onto every chance they got.
So lets sing Eddie Cochran's 'Spilled Milk' song:
'But now there's no use crying
There's no use crying over spilled milk
No use crying, there's no use crying over spilled milk'
Statistically the leading players this season are as follow:
Kully - 551 runs
Prince - 525 runs
